Margot Market Bag (Free Easy Crochet Bag Pattern)

Introduction

I love making crochet bags, how about you?! This free crochet market bag pattern a great choice for a bag with an easy stitch pattern. It’s kind of the perfect bag, in my opinion!

The mesh yields lots of stretch and is super roomy and ready for all the shopping trips! I promise you’ll love how fast and easy this free crochet pattern is.

Inspiration

I was sitting on my couch one day with my hook and yarn in hand ready to whip up another Seamless Bento Bag and inspiration hit. The Margot Market Bag and the Seamless Bento Bag are similar in design. The biggest differences being that this market bag crochet pattern has a square base for the bottom of the bag and solid handles for more stability and durability.

I wanted to make another beginner-friendly design using simple stitches. I love creating easy crochet patterns for you to make your own market bags.

About the Yarn

I used double strands of Lily Sugar N’ Cream cotton yarn for this easy crochet market bag but there are endless yarn possibilities for this one. There aren’t a ton of bulky weight cotton yarns, but there are some out there if you don’t particularly enjoy using double strands of yarn.

You can use acrylic yarn for this free crochet pattern; however, I prefer cotton yarn for the stability it provides. I would love to see a version in bright colors!

Pro Tip: Typically, double strands of a worsted weight yarn are equivalent to a single strand of bulky yarn.

Some other yarns I would recommend are:

  • Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton (doubled)
  • Peaches & Creme (doubled)
  • Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton! (doubled)
  • Premier Home Cotton (doubled)

If you’re more of a small bag kind of person, you could simply work the written pattern as is with a single strand of worsted weight yarn and whatever mm crochet hook the yarn calls for. Using the single strand will yield a smaller version of the same bag. That would make an adorable mommy and me set!

If you haven’t heard about YarnSub.com yet, it’s a great resource for looking up yarn substitutions. You can search by weight, fiber content, gauge, and more.

Techniques Used/Usage

This bag is super easy to work up using only basic crochet stitches. You’ll start at the center of the square base of the bag, then continue in pattern without increasing to create the sides of the bag. The mesh is super stretchy giving the bag lots of room.

In the photo below, I’ve got 9 skeins of Wool Ease Thick & Quick in it with plenty of room to spare! I love using my bag for yarn shopping trips, grocery runs, and so much more.

Add a fabric lining if you’d like to hold smaller items as well!

As I’m typing up this blog post in mid-June, it’s the prime time of the year for markets of all kinds. I love using this reusable market bag for its functionality and I love all the compliments I’ve gotten on it!

Final Thoughts on the Margot Market Bag

I hope you love this crochet market tote bag pattern! Making your own bag for shopping at the farmer’s market or grocery store is a great way to reduce the use of plastic bags.

Speaking of plastic bags, do you know what plarn is? It’s plastic yarn made from cutting plastic bags from the grocery store.

To read more about plarn and how to make it, check out How To Make Plarn (Plastic Yarn) And Crochet With It. I even made a version of the free crochet bag pattern here with plarn and I absolutely love how it came out! It was the perfect size to hold a LOT of produce at the farmers market but was still easy enough to carry.

You can use plarn to make all types of reusable bags and other crochet projects too. Get creative with what you make.
