Introduction

My husband and I have been together for 8 years and this easy chunky knit blanket pattern is the first big project I’ve made for him. So naturally it had to be named after him. I’ve recently concluded that I love knitting blankets! I absolutely love the fabric that it creates and it’s very easy to make a simple knit blanket with a stunning result with beginner/easy techniques. They’re also the perfect project when you want a ‘mindless’ knit. Typically there’s no going to be much, if any, increasing or decreasing and no shaping like with clothing!

This chunky knit blanket pattern is written for an extra-long throw size. After the border setup, it’s a simple 2 row repeat until you get to the other end to finish the border. This beautiful blanket is by far the coziest I’ve made! It stayed on the couch in our living room most of the time it was worked on and it got lots of love even before it was finished. One of the things I love most about making blankets is you have a lap blanket once you’re about halfway through. For someone who’s cold all. the. time. (like me) that is an amazing bonus!

Inspiration

When you go to places like Target, do you like to stroll around and just look at whatever interesting things you can find like I do? I love finding nifty gadgets or inspiration for knit or crochet makes or DIY projects for at home. The inspiration for this blanket came from a machine made chunky knit blanket that I saw walking through my local Target a few months ago. It had a Seed Stitch border with Stockinette Stitch windows. After getting started on the body of the blanket, I couldn’t decide if I still wanted to do the windows or if I should let the Stockinette flow all the way the length of the blanket. I asked Mr. Yarnique and he immediately responded with long panels instead of windows. I love the end result. It reminds me of a mile-a-minute style blanket.

About the Yarn

I was perusing the clearance aisle at my local Joann and came across this yarn that I immediately knew needed to become a cozy blanket for Mr. Yarnique. The yarn I used is Joann’s Big Twist Natural Blend yarn which is a super bulky yarn blend of acrylic and wool. This was a new yarn for me, and I absolutely love how cozy this blanket is with the 20% wool in it. The ONLY thing I don’t like about it so far is the amount of fuzzy lint it created when I washed it in the washing machine. Fingers crossed it was just a first-time wash thing and won’t happen again in the future! They make nifty little lint removers for things like that. I think it might be time to invest in one finally!

I ended up purchasing a total of 16 skeins of yarn. I had most of a full skein of each color left. You’re welcome to substitute any super bulky weight yarn or even double strands of bulky weight yarn for your project. Some yarns that would also be great options for this chunky knit blanket pattern are:

  • Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick
  • Bernat Blanket
  • K + C Super Bulky Craft Acrylic Blend
  • HL Yarn Bee Effortless Super Bulky (a lot of makers prefer this yarn over LB WET&Q!)
  • Lion Brand Hue + Me (bulky weight yarn that could be made using double strands of yarn)
  • Yarnspirations Caron Colorama Halo (bulky weight yarn that could be made using double strands of yarn)

You could also use worsted weight yarn with smaller needles or jumbo yarn with giant 25mm needles. Keep in mind, your blanket will come out a different size if you substitute yarn weights. Imagine how huge this thing would be with jumbo yarn! I would have to resize it a bit, I think that would be TOO big of a blanket (I never thought I’d be saying that!).

Techniques Used

This chunky blanket pattern blanket is perfect for beginners and advanced beginners. If you can knit and purl, you can make this blanket! I love using easy stitches to create fresh and modern designs. Mr. Yarnique’s Chunky Knit Blanket is made up completely of Seed Stitch and Stockinette Stitch. All borders are Seed Stitch featuring Stockinette Stitch panels that run the length of the throw blanket.

I intentionally used bigger needles than my yarn called for. Using large needles gives the knit fabric that super squishy texture that I love. If you use a different yarn for your own blanket, I recommend going up a couple needle sizes to get the same effect. This can also be beneficial if you tend to be a tight knitter.

Mr. Yarnique all cozied up with his finished blanket 🙂

Final Thoughts on Mr. Yarnique’s Chunky Knit Blanket

I absolutely love how this chunky knit throw came out and Mr. Yarnique couldn’t agree more! This free pattern is written in one size but can be customized by using larger or smaller yarn and a set of circular knitting needles 2-4mm larger than what your yarn calls for to get that nice squishy drape. I could see this being a gorgeous baby blanket made with worsted weight yarn.

This was a great project to keep by my side on the couch in our living room. Every time I wanted to sit and watch something, it was right there waiting for me. Mr. Yarnique was very eager for me to finish this chunky throw for him, so he egged me on almost daily to get it finished. Blankets can sometimes take me forever to finish so his excitement definitely kept me motivated!

Get create with the stitch pattern and the colors as well! I originally wanted mine to be all hunter green but when I couldn’t find enough of that color to get the size of the blanket I wanted, I added in the navy stripes. Whether you’re using a solid color yarn, multiple different colors of yarn, or self-striping yarn, you’re going to end up with a gorgeous blanket. This blanket would be the perfect gift for loved ones for the colder months. Cuddle up on the couch or your favorite chair with a warm drink and a good book and experience the cozy vibes this chunky blanket offers. All in all, this was a very fun blanket to knit and I hope you enjoy making yours as well!

Happy knitting!
