Blanket Stitch Throw (Free Crochet Blanket Pattern)

Introduction

Have you ever had yarn work more perfectly for a crochet project than you anticipated? That was the case with this Blanket Stitch Throw.

Caron Latte Cakes is a fuzzy type of yarn and can be hard to work with if you’re not used to doing so. If you can get the hang of it, though, it makes the most amazingly soft and dense fabric.

I wanted to create a simple pattern to go with this luxurious yarn and when I tried the blanket stitch, I knew that was it for this design. What I love most about it is that it’s completely reversible, no right or wrong side!

I kept it simple with a basic rectangle, but this blanket would also look amazing with pom poms or oversized tassels for finishing.

If you like this blanket pattern, here are a few more you might be interested in, as well.

About the Yarn

I absolutely love this yarn and how this cozy blanket came out. Caron Latte Cakes is fuzzy and oh so super soft. It kind of feels like silk while you’re working with it!

It is on the heavier side, but I think that’s the only negative thing I have to say about it. I did see in reviews about this yarn that you shouldn’t put it in the dryer. This will matt up the fur, apparently, so I would avoid doing so.

You can use any yarn for this amazing blanket pattern, though. Just make sure you make a gauge swatch first if you’re looking to make a specific sized blanket. If you want to make a square blanket, simply crochet as many rows as you need for it to be the same length and width on all sides.

Side note: I only used 20 grams of the 3rd skein to get the size that I wanted and used the rest of the skein to make a long scarf on my knitting machine (this yarn works beautifully in it!).

Some other yarns I think would be great for this blanket are:

You could also use any other yarn weight and appropriate hook size to make your blanket with whichever yarn you choose. Simply create a small swatch to find out how many stitches you need for the starting chain, then crochet until you’re satisfied with the size.

Techniques Used

I tried several different stitches with this yarn before I settled on the blanket stitch. I had never used this crochet stitch pattern before. After using it, I think it’s one of the best crochet stitches for blankets and many other different projects as well.

I knew I wanted to use a stitch that would really let the yarn shine. I wanted something with great texture but not extravagant; something easy and relatively mindless with an amazing end result.

The blanket stitch uses easy stitches to create a truly beautiful result.

Resizing the blanket is very easy as well. Simply adjust the number of stitches in your starting chain (see Pattern below for starting chain multiple) to make it wider and crochet until you’ve reached your desired length.

This stitch was the perfect choice and I’m really happy with how this blanket came out. It’s the perfect beginner blanket, too, using only single crochet and double crochet stitches.

Don’t you just love when a blanket turns out beautiful as is without a border, too?!

Final Thoughts on the Blanket Stitch Throw

This beautiful blanket came out better than I could’ve hoped, and I hope you enjoy making it as well. I normally recommend blocking crochet blankets when finished, but this blanket is an example of a great pattern showcasing why that’s not always necessary. My blanket is perfectly fluffy and shaped nicely without blocking.
