Materials

When it comes to amigurumi, you’ll need more materials than with your typical crochet project. Here’s a list of some you may want to have on hand.

  • Yarn – There are lots of different types of yarn that are great for amigurumi. Worsted weight acrylic yarn and bulky or super bulky plush yarn are the most popular choices nowadays. There’s even a pattern here that is micro sized and uses embroidery floss!
  • Crochet Hook – Amigurumi patterns call for smaller mm crochet hook than the yarn calls for. You don’t always have to have exact gauge with amigurumi but you want your stitches to be tight enough that the stuffing won’t show through.
  • Stitch Markers – These are particularly handy for amigurumi because most patterns are worked in continuous rounds and you’ll need to keep track of the beginning and end of your rounds.
  • Stuffing – There are snuggler amigurumi patterns that don’t use any stuffing but most patterns do. Polyfil is the most popular choice for crafters.
  • Tapestry Needle – You’ll need a tapestry needle if you’re sewing small parts together or for embroidery.
  • Pins – These are handy for pinning your pieces together before sewing to make sure the placement is accurate.
  • Wooden Stick – A wooden stick can be useful for stuffing your amigurumi evenly.
  • Safety Eyes – Safety eyes are a cute way to add eyes to your project but beware that most people don’t recommend using them for toys that will be for small children.

Can I donate my octopus creations?

Amigurumi projects are a great idea if you’re looking for a way to donate to your local hospital. The curly tentacles of these crochet toys are perfect for the tiny arms and hands of premature babies.

Most will accept donations with some stipulations such as no safety eyes or plastic pieces due to safety reasons. Contact your local hospital to find out what types of donations they’re looking for and willing to accept.
